Wisma Nazareth – Banteng Parish – Yogyakarta, Indonesia – 05/11/10 – 18:45 West Indonesia Time.  Local people surely have their own indigenous knowledge on many things. We many times were so surprised learning, that they have even more effective and efficient than any other most modern way of knowledge and wisdoms to anticipate things. As for an example is “smoong” system in Simeulue Island at Aceh Province, Indonesia. The system was successfully saved the island’s population from tsunami in 26 December 2006 which made only seven people found died.

The YEU volunteers found that the neighborhood around the junior high school to where the IDPs been evacuated for the second time, were well prepared to respond disaster. It is unclear though, whether they ever had any disaster preparedness training, but they worked efficiently to help the IDPs and all the volunteers working for them.

“They are very well prepared, seems professional to organize the respond”, as what said by Nathalia, a YEU Volunteer.

A senior retired nurse voluntarily visited the IDPs camp and offered his expertise to help those in need. Two young ladies assessed the IDPs demography, and told that the community will prepare the breakfast whatever the number needed. The community chief organized youth groups and women to provide any helps needed by the IDPs and volunteers. The school teachers and the school board also helped to organize the place to stay.

At the same time, some of the IDPs who were able to milk their cows donated many liters of fresh milk for volunteers to drink.

All of those inter-relation and care shows how local wisdom that works for the disaster preparedness and response among the local community. ( prepared by Abang Rahino for Yakkum Emergency Unit )
