Respond PRY to Merapi Volcano Eruption

Dear friends and partners,

I would like to update you with our current situation related to Mt.Merapi eruption.

Since its first eruption on Tuesday, 26 October 2010 at 18.10 Western Indonesian Time, Merapi  has keep erupting and become worse. Last night 12 more people were killed in addition to at least 32 people who were killed  due to the first eruption. Most of them were the residents of Kinahrejo sub-village, Umbulharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman.  The situation is uncertain as it is  difficult to predict when the volcano ends its wildness.

The 40.000 people within a 10 km zone in prone areas spread in Klaten, Sleman, Magelang, and Boyolali should be evacuated and become IDPs. Accumulation of IDPs increases due to the continuation of Merapi volcano activities. In Special Province of Yogyakarta, it is noted at least 17.903 IDPs. Government of Central Java informed 50ig.581 IDPs spread in Magelang, Klaten, and Boyolali districts. Since BPPTK broaden the safety zone to 15 kilometers from the peak, the number of IDPs increases due to evacuation to safer zone.Last night the safety zone was even widened to 20 kilometer from the peak. Our centre is located 21 kilometer from the peak.

What PRY has done

Currently we are accommodating 97 refugees plus 32 children and young adults with disabilities who are currently joining rehabilitation program at Pusat Rehabilitasi Yakkum. The refugees are persons with mental disabilities, persons with physical disability, elderly, women and children. The staff are on duty 24 hours especially the health staff.

We are alert for any situation in case the safety zone is widened and we have to be evacuated as well. We have contacted several places: churches and seminaries for evacuation if needed.

Please find attached some photos of our current situation. Please remember us in your prayers.
