How Merapi Hits Srumbung

Wisma Nazaret – Banteng Parish – Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Sunday, 14/11/10 – 22:40 West Indonesia Time. Srumbung, Magelang, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia, is located about ten kilometers away on the western slope of Merapi. Most of the citizens have salak fruit or zalacca edulis farms. It is a tropical fruit with brown sharp and a little bit hard skin. The soil in Srumbung is fertile from the volcanic materials. The sun is moderate, a condition needed for the tree to grow healthy with delicious meat of salak.

Because of the land fertility, people get rich from it. Salak be a major income for people from Srumbung.

But it was in normal time. As Mt.Merapi has been erupting since 26 October and is estimated to thrown away more than 120 million cubic meter of volcanic materials up to the air and spread out anywhere, vegetations ruined down from the ash. That hits also ten of thousands of salak trees in Srumbung. Also coconut trees, and any plantations that they can find on the ground.

Pictures going along with this short narrative were taken early in the morning, Sunday, 14 November 2010, in Srumbung. They show the powerful Merapi, giving some context on how the eruptions ruin down the economical life of Srumbung with its salak farms cultivated by hard worker farmers. Also how the sun was hiden behind the flying materials above. At the same time these also shows us the strength of its people on how to respond the disaster (Narration and pictures prepared by Abang Rahino for Yakkum Emergency Unit)
