YEU Earthquake and Potential Tsunami Update

An earthquake of 8.5 Richter Scale struck 382 kilometres South West Banda
Aceh with 303 kilometres depth, at 3.38 pm local time, 11 April 2012.
The earthquake was felt all over Aceh and parts of North Sumatera province
such as in Medan, Nias islands and Mentawai islands for nearly 2 minutes
with some aftershocks afterwards with shorter and lower Richter scale with
the biggest scale of 6.2.
Aftershocks were still felt until 12 April morning for around 5 Richter
scale around There is a tsunami warning in effect for the Aceh province and parts of
North Sumatera province for at least two hours since the earthquake and on 6
pm, there was report of 60 cm tsunami waves in Sabang island, north of Banda

YEU network of CBO reported that the communities in Meulaboh (West Aceh),
Banda Aceh, and Nias island were evacuating to higher grounds led by the
village disaster task force using the methods agreed from the result of the
DRR trainings and assistance in the past years following the 2004 tsunami.

A quote from CBO leader from West Aceh, Suryani said: “Thank God we were not
panic, evacuation were done properly and good to see our homes were strong.
Good we were trained proper tsunami preparedness measurement.”

Some damages of the earthquake were reported but information from the
authorities were not yet released.

Tsunami warning has been activated for two times but has been lifted.
